Effective Strategies for Teaching ELL (due Dec. 9)

Hi all,

By now, you should already identified the needs (i.e., decoding and comprehension) of your target student. Make sure that you review strategies discussed in class to come up with strategies for your students. Please do the following:

1. Read the article, Key Issues and Questions in English Language Leanrer Literacy Research(http://www.reading.org/downloads/resources/ELL_paper_071022.pdf)
2. Tell us what strategies you will be using on Monday for one-on-one tutoring.

Week 2 New Visions Literacy Partnership (due Oct. 26)

New Visions Literacy Partnership Week 1 Workplan

• Needs assessment: work with teachers to identify the needs of the target students (including examining students' IEPs, reading levels, reading strengths and weaknesses, academic backgrounds, and language backgrounds (ELLs)
• Getting to know the students (to establish rapport with the target students) through observation and working closely with them (at this point, you may do read- aloud or help teachers with learning activities)
• Write a journal reflection blog entry on week 1 field experience (Focus: how to use student needs assessment data to inform your intervention strategies). Use the two articles discussed in class for reference. Also, don’t forget about the ELA standards.
